Stayed in Thaxted for a week and didn't realise it's on Stansted's flight path, so naturally the noise of airplanes landing every few minutes was quite annoying. That is, until I went to the pub opposite the church one evening, and the church rang a single monotonous bell continuously for about 2 hours. Why? You'd have to ask them. My only hope is that the bell rope is now surely at the point of breaking, saving locals having to listen to the most tedious noise in existence. On the plus side, I have a new found appreciation of aircraft noise- every couple of minutes for a few blessed seconds, that incessant bell ringing was drowned out.

The second biggest and one of the finest finest parish churches in Essex. I like it particularly as it appears pretty well as it was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Simon Jenkins, when chairman of the National Trust, wrote 'Thaxted is the queen of Essex and her crown is the church'. The church is atop a hill, which I ascended from the nearby Guildhall. I entered, via a wicket gate, into an empty church which was set out for a series of concerts.
