They did do the job I asked for, but charged me for items I was not expecting, and did not include VAT in the quoted figures.
Make sure you obtain their terms and conditions before you accept a visit from an engineer.
If possible, I would refuse to give card details until the job has been completed, so that they cannot levy additional charges without your knowledge.
Expect to add 20% to the costs to deal with VAT.
I contacted ADI as I discovered a wet patch on the ceiling of my downstairs hallway. My insurers told me to find a plumber to discover the source of the leak. This company came up as specialists in leak detection.
I called ADI, and they explained the process of leak detection. I was told there would be a fixed fee of 495 for leak detection as this could take all day. I agreed on the basis that the work could be involved and specialist. It was mentioned that if repairs were made that there would be extra charges. No amounts were discussed, agreed, or disclosed in writing.
On the day, the engineer arrived promptly. Clearly, he is knowledgeable and conscientious; he said he is a sub-contractor, which could explain the overcharging. He used specialist equipment to discover that the leak was from a cold water source, and that most likely was from the toilet. Unfortunately, he had to break tiles to access the leak, and discovered the the inlet pipe from the cistern to the toilet was leaking. He told me that he had to isolate the water supply from the toilet, as my insurers would insist on this. He told me that all this would be in my report. He left the bathroom with an isolated toilet, some damage to tiles (which was necessary), but he cleared up after himself. The whole process took about 90 minutes. Quite short for 495, but fair enough as I had agreed to this cost. There was no mention of extra costs before I agreed to this work to isolate the toilet.
If all this sounds as expected, then it was, to this point. It was my experience from this point that led to this negative review.
The next day I was charged 894 on my credit card. 399 more than what I had agreed verbally. An 80% increase on what I expected.
I contacted ADI by email to explain that I had not yet received my report, and that they had overcharged me. I gave full contact details. They did not reply.
I contacted them again by email 2 days later. ADI did not reply. I have read reports to show that these messages were relayed and read.
I called a few days later. The person I spoke to told me that they had sent the report to me. It turned out that they had taken the wrong email address for me, which explained why I did not receive any of their communications, but not why they did not respond to my emails. This was important, because they later tried to rely on "terms and conditions" as justification for extra costs. The fact that they did not send these to me would have negated the contract. I could have challenged the extra fees with my credit card company. I did not do this in the end as ADI provided a limited refund of 50 + VAT (60), and my insurers picked up the difference.
I challenged the extra costs - VAT was never mentioned to me on the phone, and anyway this would be unacceptable practice given that as a consumer I would not be in a position to reclaim VAT. I did not agree to extra charges, and these were not mentioned by the engineer. I did not receive terms to explain additional fees, and I did not agree to them. The report and invoice I was sent listed a "repair" at an extra cost of 250 +VAT. This brought the total cost to an astronomical 894 for 90 minutes work. The "repair" in question was apparently the fact that the water was isolated from the toilet (which took 5 minutes). No reasonable person would have called this a repair.
Eventually, ADI reissued the invoice and changed the basis, with the limited refund. They were economical with the truth relating to the terms and how I was overcharged. Service: Plumbing leak detection
