Absolutely horrendous experience with my 10 year old son today. He was due to have a filling, when in the room my son was not prepped in any way by the dentist, or even greeted at that. After a struggle to get him on the bed, I had real difficulty reassuring him. At no point did the dentist or her assistant attempt to make him feel comfortable or even explain what was going to happen. As a practitioner with paedatric experience I was utterly shocked by the sheer lack of compassion and care. It was sub zero. After my boy getting frustrated (and admittedly rude toward me out of fear) the dentist told me he wasnt compliant.. despite zero attempt to reassure or try any distraction techniques, other than wave equipment around, tapping feet and tutting.. I was told to call back with his nhs number to refer for surgery. Que the conversation with reception 10 mins after leaving. The conversation was nothing short of absolutely disgusting. I was told the dentist was refusing to treat my son again because he was rude (he is 10) and told because it is Ramadan that the dentist was sensitive to it. As someone that has worked in healthcare for over a decade, in both emergency and outpatient settings and worked alongside colleagues of every faith, not once have I heard such an excuse. Given the pure lack of care given to him, that is just not warranted. Had it been that during the consultation the dentist had given even 5% effort to try and reassure him rather than say nothing but glare at us and tap her feet, I would absolutely understand that reasoning. Then to have to argue with the call taker who kept reiterating that it was Ramadan to me despite the irrelevance to the point I was calling to give his NHS number was just ridiculous. There is no correlation between giving standard care to cultural calendars no matter what it is. The aftercare was in fact worse than the care itself which is horrendous. When I asked if there was a way to express my feelings (I used PALS as an example as thats what we use at GWH) I was told to leave a review on Google.. so here it is.
