St Michael and All Angels' Church, Houghton-le-Spring

I started attending services regularly some years ago and have been welcomed as part of the family. The services are generally quite traditional, but the sermons are fresh and relevant. There is a genuine desire to serve *all* God's people without expectation of anything in return, borne out in Space4 Community Drop-in Centre based in the library on Newbottle Street, which is also well worth a visit. For those with a historical interest there is plenty of information as you walk around the building. There is in fact plenty of history as this spot has been a place of worship since before Christianity came to these Isles! Parts of the building date back to Medieval times, and a glass section in the floor reveals some archaeological excavations from 2008. Additionally, Houghton was the parish of Bernard Gilpin, "Apostle of the North", who is featured in one of the windows in Durham Cathedral, and the Church houses his tomb. Do look him up on Wikipedia or similar.
