  • Zubair Shehraz

Once upon a time, there was a young man by the name of Zubair. Every year, when it came to Eid, an integral element of his celebration was the preparation of the subcontinental Asian dessert, Seviyan. This year was no different until it came to buying the ingredients. He was able to find green cardamom in the local supermarket. Full-fat milk, flaked almonds and rose water too! However, when it came to the most crucial component of the dish, he was all out of luck. Pakistani vermicelli was nowhere to be found. Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsburys. He tried every one of them. But to no avail. All at once, his face told a tale of disgruntlement, dismay and despair as it dawned on him that Eid would be ruined and hed be reminded of this abject woe twice a year for the rest of his days. Legend has it that in that very moment his heart literally broke in two. It was at this point that like some felicitous bolt of divine inspiration, the whimsical notion of conducting a Google search for a local Asian grocery store entered his thoughts. Euuuureeeeka!, he howled as he hammered away at his keyboard with vengeful fury beaming from his widened eyes. And would you believe it, many popped up, the closest of which was the fabled ethereal kingdom of Taza. With renewed confidence and a certain verve in his stride, he made his way down to Taza where to his delight, he found vermicelli! I hasten to add it was Bengali vermicelli and not the Pakistani variation he had sought after, but after brief evaluation of the packaging, he saw no difference of note. He grabbed two packets with vigor and headed to the counter triumphantly where a friendly chap greeted him. He paid up, they exchanged pleasantries, and he galumphed joyously back home where he went on to have the best Eid ever. His heart mended instantaneously, and he went on to be the happiest man that ever lived. The end.
