Rushcliffe Spencer Academy Sixth Form began working with YOPEY around 6 years ago. Since then more than 200 students have benefitted from the hugely rewarding experience of spending quality time with elderly people who face the challenge of dementia. Not only do the care home residents benefit from spending some time with YOPEYs young, well trained and enthusiastic individuals who really care, but the volunteers themselves learn some very important life skills. Many students use the experience to gain practical experience and knowledge that helps them to decide whether to pursue a career in medicine, nursing or other health related disciplines. We are hoping to re-new our relationship with YOPEY again in September 2022 in the light of Covid restrictions being lifted. Overall, the Befriender programme is an excellent worthwhile scheme that is fully appreciated by the managers of care homes, their staff, the residents, the residents families and our young volunteers and wider Sixth Form community .
