The hareCastle tunnel is one of the longest canal tunnels in England. Built in the late 18th century to link Kidsgrove with Tunstall to take iron ore to the Potteries. It is 1.6 miles long (2.6 km) twelve ft high and nine ft wide. It is 640 feet under the harecastle Hill. Ventilation is provided by huge electric fans in the building at south end of the tunnel. It is a fantastic experience to take a boat through this tunnel.

The C&RT staff and volunteers very thorough with the safety briefing. It was a bit of a squeeze through the lowest part of the tunnel. Will definitely take roof boxes off when we go through again!

Travelling through the tunnel is a great experience. A word of warning about the air draft gauge at the entrance though. If your roof box clears the gauge it does not mean it will necessarily clear the tunnel unscathed.
