Mayfield has been my GP surgery for 27 years. It used to be great before Dr James McCarthy retired (the practice is owned by him and his sister, Dr Mary - who has now also retired). Both James and Mary are lovely people, were excellent doctors, and have been good family friends for decades.
But now the practice is awful. It's no surprise the surgery is currently in Special Measures.
There is no easy way to book appointments. Appointments are often cancelled or changed last minute by the practice. 9/10 times you will be seen by a nurse and not a doctor. It is impossible to see a doctor in person. The few good doctors that work there are always leaving so no-one is familiar with your medical history. Triage is non-existent. The receptionists are the most rude, condescending and unhelpful people ever.
Referrals also never happen even when promised, and you are never given a follow up even for something serious. Test results are also never given to you, even when they are bad.
An example being when my sister was having issues with her Thyroid. It ended up being that she had cancer. But her treatment was delayed by about 6 months because the surgery refused to take her issues seriously. When she eventually convinced them to do some tests, she wasn't told that they'd come back positive for cancer after her results were sent to the GP, because the GP never informed her. Eventually she called to ask if the results had come back yet, and was told they'd come back weeks ago.
It's amazing how incompetent they are. And if you complain about the quality of the treatment to the reception team, you have a high chance of being blacklisted by them (something that is blatantly illegal) and unable to use your GP at all. Mayfield Surgery is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I implore anyone looking for a GP to give this a miss.
