The sculpture has been moved from its previous location on the other side of the market so keep that in mind in case you cant find it. Wooden Boat with Seven People is a sculpture by the Greek-born sculptor, painter, and filmmaker Kalliopi Lemos. Part of her series, Navigating the Dark, the boat in the sculpture was a real one used to transport refugees from Turkey to Greece. The artist got it after being abandoned on the Greek shore.

Kalliopi Lemos is a Greek sculptor, painter and installation artist. She lives and works in London and during the last decade she has exhibited in various international venues. Wooden Boat with Seven People (2011) features an authentic boat that was used to transport refugees from Turkey to the shores of the Greek islands. This Installation, made of wood and steel, aims to reflect Spitalfields' rich history of providing shelter for successive waves of migrants across the ceturies. This is not just a beautiful artwork but a special one with a strong connection with Spitalfield.

7 ( for each day of the week) apathetic and featureless outlined steely figures on an authentic Turkish fishing-boat, referencing the dangers and continuing plight of refugees seeking safe harbour. Rudderless, surrounded by a human sea of indifference, bobbling on the former ancient graveyard, later a Medieval refuge and hospice, Spital-field, a reminder of the ongoing waves of uprooted immigrants who have made a new life in the precinct. .. a true-born Englishmans a contradiction In speech an irony, in fact a fiction. A banter made to be the jest of fools..* *Daniel Defoe. (1660-1731)
