I was honestly disappointed with the place. We went there during lunch time as it was close by and we read good reviews. We ordered 1 mezze each and a small portion on a very small plate arrived. For 3 people we ended with a bill of nearly 90 (so 30 per person) for a drink each (non alcoholic!), a mezze each and some bread and zaziki that we shared. And I can't really say that this was even filling considering the price that we paid for it. Sorry, but I won't visit again, this is overpriced, even for London

The experience I had at Brother Marcus in Spitalfield was very unpleasant. - I would like to highlight that the DISCRETIONARY service charge of a total of 16.89 (13.5%), as shown in my bill, was automatically added on the total and, when we asked the staff if it was discretionary as clearly shown on the bill or if it was compulsory, they answered that we had to pay for it. To avoid to start an argument, we paid the total of the bill. But it's crucial now that we're all aware that by law they cannot force a customer to pay a discretionary service charge, this is what HMRC internal manual clearly reports. This is only happening in London, and eating out in this city is expensive enough and this behavior is unacceptable. I hope that people are not just accepting to pay a discretionary fee without even knowing what they're doing. By law, we can refuse to pay for it without giving any explanation. If they're trying to pay their employees by tricking their costumers, they're really wrong. - I ordered a mini red velvet cake and the sponge was very dry and tasteless. I wonder how they can actually sell a dry slice of cake like that and charge 3.60 for a mini size. - The sweet potato fritters was overall tasty even though I would expect a bigger portion for 14.20. For some reason, meat dishes were all bigger than my vegeterian one. Based on the reasons above, I cannot give more than 1 star. I rarely write negative reviews like this one, but as a consumer, we can't allow them to trick us this way, it's disgusting. If you ask for discretionary service charge, then you tell your employees to inform the customer that it is discretionary, which doesn't certainly mean we must pay for it.

Fantastic place - brunch (shakshuka) was super-tasty, reasonably priced and service from Alina was excellent. It was my birthday brunch with my girlfriend, and the staff (Alina) made us feel super-welcome and brought out a birthday cake for dessert. 100% would recommend.
