[I had a new injury lower back injury caused in part by wrongfully been treated by the NHS for referred pain years ago after a RTA side impact affecting the right side of me and my upper back. With MRI scans years ago not being available but with my own knowledge about my old injury and now with the new MRI scans results the physiotherapist and I could work together to treat the correct muscles.]
My experience is physiotherapy only works if the correct exercises are given and you put in the effort yourself at home. Occasionally if the physiotherapist manipulates muscles this adds to the help but it on its own will not always cure the problem.
Each therapist has a range of experience therefore work with them, give them feedback on each appointment ensure you understand how to do your exercises as these are skills that you are developing to help maintain your physical health in areas that have be injured or weakened over time.
Yes it cost money but its about the same as other private therapies do therefore I wish the NHS could provide the correct level of support to all of us which in my case I needed so I could return to work knowing I was strong enough to not repeat damage again. In 2019 the NHS offered 4 appointments with a long wait and gaps between each appointment. Where as this Total Physiotherapy offered appointments approximately every 2 weeks and you can start work on reduce pain and reduce the risk of further injury once all medical checks have been done. There for me there was no delay.
My advice is: Any physiotherapist needs a clear understanding whats going on in your first appointment for the real work to continue. Their aim is for you to recover wherever possible. This means on attending appointments you should be prepared update them about your struggles and areas of weakness as well as what improved. This means it maybe necessary (as in my case) for you to reveal areas of skin for the physiotherapist to see how muscles are affected. You may wish to bring a towel or think how best to dress for modesty.
Good luck with your recovery and remember sometimes doing relaxing or slow gentle muscles strengthening exercises for fun like walking, swimming or Pilates can at times also help alongside Physiotherapist just ask your GP or physio what best for your type of injury as painkillers are not a cure but a last resort.
