Only few yards away from the Warrior Square Road Car Park along the Danes Avenue, couple of derelict ancient can be seen along with a historic mound. The Buildings are the Powder Magazines built in 1852 owned by Ministry of Defence (MoD) and are now part of the Gunners Park. The area surrounding the Magazine Powders are now overtaken by bushes, plants and trees. Natural Footpaths being created across the land by recurrent use by the locals. The Powder Magazines are Grade II Listed Military Buildings and sealed off completely so there is no public access inside. Only the outside of the structure is visible to visitors. The mound is thought to be a Viking rampart - a defensive wall - built in 894AD. It is called Danish Camp as it was thought to be built/used by a Danish Viking leader. There is an Information Board in the corner of Mess Road detailing many of these details. As it is under large trees, Nature has done its work and board is unreadable because of bird droppings! Across the Warrior Square Road, historic Cart & Wagon Shed is going to be re-purposed as a Heritage Centre offering educational & recreational services to local communities and hosting Local Archives. Once it is open to public, hopefully, it will display much more information about these historic buildings and mound.
