All significant roles/parts are given to eldest children in the class. Younger children are left to stand behind, watching one girl (or boy) show. If you are lucky enough to be born in September and are one of the oldest children in the class, you get leading roles and speaking parts in every performance and school play. If you are born in August and are one of the youngest children, then you will be stuck at the back. We watched one girl's ego being massaged for several years, from reception onwards. She was the oldest and tallest. She was the narrator and prima donna every time. It was very disheartening for other children who simply did not get a chance.
