The machine kept the money but charged my card and the staff could not have helped less.

I really had a good experience today for opening a bank account from Sofia Feliciano! So moved with the customer service!

Aged 64, I have banked with Barclays since I was 13. Prior to Covid, the now defunct Kew Village branch offered first-rate personal service. Unfortunately, there could be no greater motivation to quit Barclays than to enter the Richmond-upon-Thames branch. Whatever time of day you arrive, you will find yourself milling around aimlessly before joining a fiscal triage caterpillar of coughing, spluttering souls bored out of their minds by the interminable wait for the queue to move forward by even one customer toward the podium occupied by the "disgruntled sacrificial staff member of day." Should you ever reach the front of the queue before losing it and departing in a huff (I confess that I have rarely stayed the course), you might if you are lucky be permitted over the threshold into the banking nirvana that boasts an actual counter (usually unmanned), some intimidating looking machines that supposedly do everything but make tea, and a couple of side offices where real staff members dwell but never seem to be available to the great unwashed. Do yourself a favour and stuff your money in your mattress instead.
