Ive been coming to Patrices classes for about 8-9 months now, and Im in love. Ive done classic krav maga on and off for a few years, so I didnt need convincing about the benefits and the joys of reality-based self-defence systems. But this is the first school where Ive finally understood how I can become a more fluent, improvisational fighter (instead of learning a set of standalone techniques) and have started to understand the basic underlying fundamentals that explain the logic of self-defence moves movement, momentum, leverage points, etc. Ive also, somehow, without realising, lost my fear of sparring because sparring techniques get introduced gradually and sensibly, at an early stage. For krav maga practitioners who are put off by the word urban please dont be! Urban is where its at! This system introduces much needed modifications to the classic krav maga curriculum, including much more thorough groundwork (thanks to the influence of BJJ), much more flexibility in adapting techniques to people of different sizes, and much more openness towards experimenting and finding solutions that work for YOU. All the key elements of classic krav maga are present and correct: realistic attack scenarios, explosive reaction, compound defence moves, stress tests, etc. Patrices classes also include cardio conditioning and punching/ kicking practice both essential self-defence elements that are, sadly, not a guarantee in all schools. The fact that UKM is not affiliated with big international organisations means that its blissfully free of some of the annoying classic KM features, like the frequently encountered obsession with grading and the resulting obnoxious class hierarchies between students (God forbid a yellow belt should want to train with a green belt!). Patrice is a fantastic instructor: very good at what he does, smart, adaptive, creative, faultlessly professional. He also goes above and beyond to make sure the women who attend the sessions are comfortable and can learn in a supportive, non-threatening environment, and pays extra (discrete) attention to students who have experienced trauma. At the same time, students (male or female) who want to go hard and roll around on the floor and give each other a ton of bruises are warmly encouraged to do so, so everyone can pick a training level at which theyre suitably challenged (and a training partner that helps them do that). The special seminars are also fantastic, very useful, and very humbling. I was wary about coming back to krav maga after a lengthy break, having experienced pretty gnarly crime-related trauma. I definitely couldnt have handled the typical testosterone-fuelled instructor style that I had gotten used to in other schools. At the same time, Ive always loved to train hard, and have a deep-seated need to be taken seriously in a traditionally male space, and to keep up with the boys. It was not easy to strike an appropriate balance between those two things! While my mental recovery has definitely been non-linear, and is still something I struggle with, Patrice has really helped me to build myself back up over the past 8-9 months (directly and indirectly), and has gone beyond the call of duty to help me deal with my trauma. Im profoundly grateful to him for this. Tl;dr - come for a great workout, stay for the expertly taught life skills, personal growth, and a chance to have good, clean, violent fun with a lovely bunch of people.
