I picked up the trousers and whilst still looking for a top to go with them, one of the assistants went up to another customer and offered to put her clothes in a changing room for her to try on. She then walked past me to my friend and offered to do the same for her.
At no point did she offer this service to me or acknowledge I was even in the shop. I then had to sit and wait as one changing room had the ladys items in it (who was still looking at clothes and wasnt ready to go in) and my friend had gone into the cubicle where her items were. I continued to wait whilst still sitting on the chair hoping to be able to try on the items only to watch the lady go off to talk to the other shop assistant and still not acknowledge I was in the shop or waiting to try items on.
I must point out at this juncture that my friend and the other customer are white and I am black. Given that my friend had the same muddy clothes/trainers on I dont think it was related to being a bit scruffy looking (which in itself would be bad enough) and in the absence of any other mitigating factors to set us apart I had to deduce that it might be because of my skin colour.
I would absolutely hate to think that this is the case and would welcome input from the two sales assistants as to why failed to acknowledge my presence.
I was very upset and told my friend I was leaving and why and then left the shop. My friend got dressed and did the same. This is now how I expect to be treated.
