While Slaley Hall hotel is very good the golf course was appalling. While I understand that only having 3 days without rain in March makes it difficult to maintain, it also made it a dangerous marshland to play on. My husband almost slipped twice playing a shot and the water on the fairway actually came over the top of my shoe. The fairway was also like rough as understandably they were unable to cut the fairway grass. In short any other course in the UK would have been closed under health and safety. We abandoned our round yesterday and cancelled our tee time for today. The golf manager was less than courteous stating "if people had traveled a similar distance or more than we had (over 100 miles) they would want the course to remain open" This was obviously a common occurrence at this course, receiving a well rehearsed and inappropriate response. He said he could offer a free voucher but we would then go to Bunkered and ask for another voucher. This was a very inappropriate statement.
