It was a shock to be rung one morning by my mother's emergency care line and asked if we could go and stay with her until the paramedics arrived, as she was unable to get herself off the loo. We live nearly three hours drive away, so the agency were well aware this would not be possible. However the carer having contacted her emergency line, filled in her diary entry and left a very frail vunerable 91year old as she had to go to the next client!
She had been seen by paramedics two nights previously and we only found out about this when we saw their report on her dining table the day after when we visited her.on speaking with office staff they appeared to think that the situation was not a problem as they had activated her alarm service, and left her a drink.....
We were lucky enough to have a local friend (former nurse practitioner) who arrived at the same time as the paramedics. My mother was subsequently admitted to hospital and the staff were not impressed by the agency's apathetic attitude. The paramedics and my friend gathered from the notes and my mother, that she may have been sitting there for up to 4 hours, but office staff insisted this wasn't the case.
I have terminated her care with this agency with a heavy heart, as they were personally recommended and most of the carers seemed to do just that. If the agency pressures them to leave clients in situations such as this then their so called emergency cover is woeful.
