Taz, our German Shepherd dog collapsed on Monday 24th May while we were on holiday in Cornwall - we called the emergency vet number at Penmellyn and they advised us to bring him straight to their vet hospital. The vet that we saw made an initial diagnosis, clearly explained the options on next steps and was empathetic but also very realistic. Tests were carried out and she called us with the results every step of the way, providing the information we needed to make the right decisions, always keeping Tazs welfare front of mind. Unfortunately in the end there was nothing more that could be done and we had to say goodbye to him. The way the practice staff communicated with us and their blend of empathy and clear advice really helped us as we navigated our way through this very distressing situation - we cannot thank them enough for their professional and caring support.

Yesterday I had to take my dog here as the vet at our Bodmin branch was currently operating. The day staff who saw us were completely wonderful and kind. My dog had been bringing up blood and we had no idea why so we decided with the vets to investigate and do X-rays which meant sedation, this was ok and again the staff at that time were great. A few hours later we collected our beautiful girl and took her home, I have had dogs all my life so am very very aware of after sedation effects and our girl had also been sedated in the past so we knew she would be very sleepy. Fast forward a few hours and she seemed to be getting worse and not better, her eyes were completely fixed, her breathing was very slow, she was wetting herself continuously and I hadnt seen any of my other animals like this after sedation before. So I then called the vets back as the day staff had told me to call if I had any concerns and I just wanted to check as my girl wasnt responding to us at all. The receptionist (despite my constant apologies) seemed like I was an annoyance, yes I know I may have been worrying but apart from one time of a half hearted its ok, she made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. Then she put me on the phone to the vet eventually (which felt like it was just to get rid of me) and he again made me feel silly for my concerns and who pointed out SEVERAL times that my dog was sedated so heavily as she doesnt like other dogs! I am so fed up of vets making us feel uncomfortable because our rescue dog who had a horrific start in life doesnt cope with other animals. We go out of our way to avoid situations for others and her, but to be told thats why shes so unresponsive still after hours was horrible to hear. Still the vet said by 9pm she should be up and about more, still tired but ok! She was no where near, for hours and hours she wet through every towel I own wetting herself so bad and I felt awful for her, she hadnt been able to stand, drink or do anything until the early hours but I didnt feel comfortable to call back because I was treated like a paranoid annoying dog mum, by 1am my girl was vomiting everywhere and still not able to balance/drink or have the small bland food they said for her to have. I am not a vet so I just needed reassurance and I can honestly say witnessing hours and hours of my girl laying like that was so hard to see, even after general anaesthetic shes never been this bad. Even if this was completely normal and she had to have a heavy sedation that caused this, a small amount of genuine reassurance would have been nice. It has made us worry for future visits as this branch is the main hospital, as it will be hard to feel comfortable again. It was such a shame this happened yesterday because our Bodmin branch are incredible with our girl and are the kindest most patients vets we have ever been to. I fully admit I was a scared worried fur mum, but if something is very different to the norm then how are we supposed to know our pets are ok? Just really disappointed after such a wonderful service from Bodmin.
