The grounds contain the original walled garden that was the inspiration for "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett who lived at Great Maytham for almost a decade. The restored walled garden with its rose pergola, planted borders and fountain is really charming and very understated in contrast to the more exuberant Great Dixter and Sissinghurst, both just a few miles away. There are also wooded areas, lawns, a rose terrace and the substantial Lutyens building (not open to garden visitors).
