(Translated by Google) Secret Garden Secret Garden The author's former residence. The history of Mason House can be traced back to 1721, when the owner was Captain James Monipan of the Royal Navy, and generations of Monipan's descendants also lived in this villa. In 1893, the villa was destroyed by fire and was not rebuilt until 1898. Between 1898 and 1907, Frances Hossen Burnett lived in the newly rebuilt Mason Building for eight years. During this period, Burnett accidentally discovered it through a small door hidden in the vines. The abandoned rose garden next to the Mason Building. Later, she created "Secret Garden" based on this experience. (Original) Secret Garden 172118931898 18981907

The grounds contain the original walled garden that was the inspiration for "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett who lived at Great Maytham for almost a decade. The restored walled garden with its rose pergola, planted borders and fountain is really charming and very understated in contrast to the more exuberant Great Dixter and Sissinghurst, both just a few miles away. There are also wooded areas, lawns, a rose terrace and the substantial Lutyens building (not open to garden visitors).
