Today after collecting my daughter from school, I thought I would visit the local shop T & H newsagents (Premier, High street) on the way home. Something happened that totally shocked me! I had my first experience of racial bias within this village. So I thought I would alert and educate people at the same time. When in the shop, my daughter was picking which sweets she wanted to buy, as I thought she deserved a treat. Once she had chosen, she put them on the counter (she is 4 and was very excited) however I was not yet ready to pay as I was still looking for what I needed. Out of nowhere, the owner of the shop said "can you hurry up". Now, I can not imagine this is how he treats or speaks to every customer, as he would have very little custom. I responded by telling him it wasn't very nice to speak to a customer in that manner and he is more then welcome to serve the next customer (as there was only one person waiting.) The shop keeper could clearly see I was not ready, as I was still browsing the shelves. Instead his response was to tell me to get out of his shop, repeatedly, which I was bemused and shocked by. I told him his behaviour was disgusting and that is not how to treat a paying customer. Due his behaviour, I had no choice but to leave the shop and not purchase the items my daughter had selected. My daughter then cried the entire walk home, as not only did she want her treat but also she saw how angry he was and how upset I had been with the whole situation. Racial bias is not acceptable by means and unconscious racism is a real. I have always found the people in this village to be friendly and welcoming. However, this experience has made me feel very disappointed, especially as my 4 year old had to witness how disgusting and mean some people's behaviour can be.
