S&O were fantastic. We couldnt believe how fast our attic came down and how fast the dormer then went up! Im usually anxious about building work and any issues that may arise but there were none whatsoever with S&O. Professional and the job that was done, we couldnt be happier with. Very tidy, punctual and great to work with.

When I read reviews, I want to know two things: are the company capable and how do they cope when things go wrong. S&O are brilliant builders - the best I've worked with - and I don't say that lightly. They're really capable but more importantly they're excellent when things go wrong. Converting lofts in houses that are nearly 100 years old is complicated, so things don't always run smoothly. Sometimes it's because someone made a mistake today (taps left on, bathroom flooded), sometimes the mistake was made 20 years ago and has just been waiting there to be exposed (incomplete ring main on first floor). The thing is that's the reality of building work. No company can hide you from it, but S&O do a great job of helping sort it out. We lived in our house right through the build and they bent over backwards to make that nice for us; little things like putting tools away and hoovering every night so we didn't feel like we were living on a building site. S&O are weak at a few of the things that don't really matter. Our first meeting left us pretty despondent about the conversion; the architect's drawings were only indicative and didn't appear until 2 weeks before the build and there was no project plan so we didn't know when or how we could influence things. I don't make good decisions on the fly and in retrospect I made some poor ones because of it, but nothing too serious. The end of the job wasn't rushed, but it was a bit unclear when things were done, fully complete and tested. This is all just project management stuff and it doesn't matter because this was a very good project, but it made me nervous because I've been involved (and led) some bad projects when you really need the project management process as a fallback. S&O are strong at all the things that matter. The standard of the work is first rate (see other reviews). They're genuinely good value (their materials are excellent and all building materials have inflated in price recently) and great people to have in your home. The build concluded in great time. They had people on site every day. The lads work really hard. They seem genuinely interested in getting on and doing really good work, which as a client is fantastic thank you. Finally I want to recognise the most amazing thing that Steve and Owen (and Matty, John, Jack, Debbie and Harry) did for us. They stewarded us through a building project, which they knew much more about than we did. They did it humanely, they were never patronising, they were flexible, they were fast and they were thorough. There were a lot of things we wanted to do that weren't really options, so they had the impossible task of trying to convince us the best thing to do was to follow their advice: get the conversion done the S&O way because they do this all the time and they do it brilliantly!
