My partner woke up on Sunday morning to find his rear passenger tyre completely flat. I come from a family of mechanics, but none of their garages were open on a Sunday so we quickly reinflated the tyre and headed to Kwikfit. They couldn't look at the car then, but gave us an appointment for the next morning. My partner had to be at work so I took the car in for him. I was told that the tyre in question was cracked and unrepairable. Additionally, the other three tyres were also perishing and required replacing. I was quoted 225 for two tyres and that the other two would need to be ordered in, so 450 in total. We bought this car from a family friend, who is also a mechanic, and he'd told us that he'd put a full set of brand new tyres onto the car 6 months ago. I opted to take the car to my brother's garage instead, now that it was open. He looked over all four tyres. He said that yes, the tyre in question did have a puncture, but was easily repairable. The other three were perfectly fine, no signs of perishing or wear, and were clearly recently new. My brother repaired the puncture in front of me in less than five minutes and charged me nothing for it. Kwikfit wanted over 400 for work that was clearly unnecessary. Since my father, brother, and grandfather are all mechanics, I don't like to believe old idea that garages overinflate costs when they see a woman walk in alone, assuming that we know nothing about cars - but Kwikfit is doing nothing to help that stereotype. Avoid.
