Went to look at a car at Carson Motors. We had set up an appointment and arrived at the site 10 to 15 minutes early. The principal,Tony, was not there but arrived within five minutes after being called. Tony pointed out the car and permitted us as much time to check out the vehicle as much as possible. We asked if we could take it for a test drive, and Tony obliged. He pointed out that for insurance reasons, only one of us could go on the test drive. There were several issues with the car in our estimate, and we made an offer based on what we thought the problems were. Tony refused to budge on the price, so we left to look for the right car elsewhere. Tony responded that we offered him 500 below the price of the car we looked at. Why was that? The car has a part exchange value of 710 which he acquired in the last month. He is offering it at a sale price of 2190. He claims he paid much more than the 710 part exchange price. If so, shame on him. Additionally, when the car was taken on a test drive, the clutch was extremely stiff in first gear, although it was fine on all the other gears. It could be a minor problem, or it may warrant a clutch repair, which would be more than the discount asked. When the test drive ended, a message saying Engine Fault popped up briefly. We did not have time nor the tools to investigate what this meant, but certainly, it was not a good omen. Additionally, the parking sensors did not work, the center console for storage was very loose, the plastic inside and right below the windscreen was warped and rattled about as you drove, and there many small scratches, especially around the door handles. One of the problems is that this car is 19 years old and finding replacement parts is not easy. Additionally, the warranty that is available cost 299 for two years. It covers claims up to 1000 for each claim submitted during the two year coverage. Tony did offer to provide a three month warranty if we paid the full price. In the end, we would have purchased the car at the lower price so that we would have money to cover the majority of the repairs we felt were needed and the inconvenience of not having the car while it was in the garage for repairs. In the end, we made a fair offer based on a vehicle that had shortcomings. Unfortunately for us and Tony, we could not come to an agreement on a fair value that suited us both.
