My sister booked an afternoon tea for my birthday. Sorry to say we were both very disappointed. We were greeted by a young lady who booked us on and showed us to our table. Before we had even got coats off or sat down she was taking the order for tea and then disappeared. The tea arrived and a few minutes later a waiter asked us for our choice of sandwiches. Nobody told us we had to choose anything. There was a menu on the table but nothing to say we had choices to make. The waiter said he would come back. 10 minutes later a waitress came to take our order and asked us if she could interest us in some extra items 5 each. Upselling is for supermarket checkouts or coffee shops at the till, not posh afternoon tea venues! When the food arrived it did not look tempting. The whole display was beige. No fresh fruit decoration, no chrystal white meringue, no sausage roll, pork pie or mini quiche (except for 5 extra). The sandwiches were dry. A little mayo would have made all the difference. The scones were more like rock cakes. All the cakes were mid brown. The chef needs to find a recipe for frangipane because something lumpy on top, tasting of mincemeat and the consistency of caramel is not a frangipane tart! The waiter looking at his watch was not good so obviously we were not eating fast enough. We took the leftovers home in a box. This is the first time I have ever been asked to sign a disclaimer that once the food left the premises they couldn't guarantee the safety or freshness. Who sued them? My sister being an honest person told the waiter it was disappointing and he offered a cream tea voucher as compensation. I don't think he got the point. The tea was nice.
