JAW design

In 2019, I approached the conversion and redesign of the former Smithy in the village of Sutton-on-the-Forest near York with some trepidation. This was largely because I had no former experience and because the Smithy belonged to a larger cluster of buildings grouped around a Grade II listed eighteenth century cottage. The conversion had to be sympathetic to the architectural style of village as a whole and the hierarchy of the neighbouring buildings needed to be observed. Jonathan Wilson was recommended to us by Matthew Vasey, our builder. They have worked together very successfully on a number of projects in the past and have known one another for a long time. We liked Jonathan from the first moment we met him. Our project was quite small beer when compared to some of the buildings that Jonathan has designed in the past, both in the UK and abroad, but he never for a second made us feel that our little project was insignificant or uninteresting to him. He gave us the same attention and support that he would give to any project. As a former art school graduate and designer, I quickly discovered that we had a similar education and spoke the same language. I had quite a few ideas about what I wanted and Jonathan, who shares my passion for contemporary design, was only too willing to discuss these and to incorporate them where possible, often finding a way to improve upon them. Jonathan managed the planning process entirely, rendering it painless, indeed he walked us through the whole thing from start to finish. My wife and I are delighted with his design for the Smithy, and very much enjoy living in it, since it suits our needs entirely. The contemporary touches elevate it from the purely ordinary and has helped convert a fairly small and unremarkable building into a home and space which continues to delight two years on. Jonathan Wilson is personable and charming, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and professional. I have absolutely no hesitation whatsoever in recommending him and the services of his company, JAW Design, to you. He would be the very first person we would speak to if we were to undertake a renovation or new build project in the future!
