The initial meeting with Joanna was good. She reassured me and offered help, and we agreed on the fee. She confirmed to deliver the tax return in five days, which took two weeks instead. I had never got tax bill so high in my life. Her breakdown of my business expenses did not make sense to me, and she did not even look at the prepared spreadsheets I sent her. She was not happy at all to revise on accounts again, even though she did it. Ultimately, I had to go through all transactions and invest my time to additionally decrease my tax bill. Before submitting the final tax return, Joanna refused to show me the final tax figures before paying the invoice. When I asked why advance payment is requested, she said "I don't know if you will pay me once I show you my work". Very demeaning at least to say, and she never said anything about being paid before finishing her job when I was hiring her. Still I agreed and settled invoice in advance per request. When Joanna submitted my tax return, I realised that she had let HMRC predict my earnings for next year, which has doubled my tax bill. She never verbally communicated with me about this of offered any options, and I asked her to modify that as my earnings went significantly down. She said she could not modify the submitted figures, which I knew was untrue. When put in front of the fact that I was aware modification could be made, she agreed to edit submitted tax return only if I paid her more. At that point I was so profoundly displeased with her attitude and service level, that I expressed I was not happy, all in very respectful way, and agreed to pay an extra fee to fix this. Instead she disappeared, never replied to my emails and left me with nasty tax bill. As a cherry on the top, once I called HMRC, the representative told me that she edited the submitted tax return and increased my tax bill. She did that without telling me anything about the edit. And all after saying that, she would not fix or edit anything without me paying first and has stopped communicating with me, but has granted herself the grace to edit for free and make my tax bill even higher than it was - when already double. She also used private closed software to submit tax return and not an open system on the HMRC website, which made her the only person that can access and edit the submitted assessment form, making it impossible for a self-employed individual or another accountant to make any amendments. Dreadful service, the opposite of helpful, has almost crippled my business and left me cash strapped.
