St Mary's Church in Pembridge is best known for is detached bell tower, the finest of seven similar towers in Herefordshire. The bell tower has an octagonal stone base is topped by three stages of timber frame spire. The structure is much restored but dates from the early 13th century, the largest oak beams have been dated to 1207. The Norman church was replaced in the 14th century. The interior is light and airy, home to a well-preserved, 14th century chest tomb complete with four effigies. It is thought to depict members of the Gour family. The font beneath the large west window is 13th century. The altar rail, pews, pulpit and reading desk are Jacobean and ornately carved. The wall paintings on the south wall are 17th century, uncovered during restoration work. The church also houses a healthy colony of Natterer's bats.

I parked the other side of the village, just by the bridge and wildflower meadow, which gave me the opportunity to walk the length of the main street and appreciate the church emerging from behind the traditional black and white buildings. It did not disappoint! It was great to see inside the unusual bell tower. I loved the tapestries about the history of the place, and the clothiers display.

A beautiful and historic stone church in a very lovely black and white Herefordshire village. Has a very unusual bell tower situated next to the church.well worth a look on it's own. There are some excellent displays in the church which like the bell tower are worthy of a visit alone! Quite a large church with old oak seats. There is a lovely green fronting the church and there are outstanding views from here. A must visit place, something of a jewel in the Herefordshire Crown! I take all my visitors here.
