A beautiful little church. I was visiting for the first time and a newcomer to Torquay. As someone who, by preference, attends the old rite of Mass, and the liturgy of whose home parish is done very beautifully, it is always with a degree apprehension that I visit a new church; I have experienced liturgical anarchy and liturgies barely recognisable as Catholic. However, the parish priest, Fr Colin Groombridge, was properly vested, had a well-trained young altar server (who did however bow repeatedly to the altar whilst ignoring the tabernacle!) and said the novus ordo Mass in a correct, thoughtful, prayerful and reverent manner. He preached a good sermon with the Gospel text of the day as his theme. I was disappointed by the use made of an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. There were, I guess, at most 40-50 people in the congregation; there appeared to be, in addition to Fr Groombridge, another ordained minister in the sanctuary; he was vested in what looked like a dalmatic so I guess he was a deacon. There appeared to be no extraordinary circumstance that would justify the use of an Extraordinary Minister. My comments relate to the Saturday evening vigil Mass. I understood from the parish website that there would be no Sunday morning Mass in the church in this particular weekend. It seems that the priest alternates between two churches, but I may be wrong about this.
