Just returned from a disappointing safari to Selous in southern Tanzania. We had wanted something extra special to celebrate a significant birthday and would be my last safari. This was our fifth safari. Dont really feel our requirements were listened to and it was not explained to us that the area you are allowed to visit, in what is a huge park, is actually very small. Our first and last lodges were only about 50 k from each other. Game is scarce, apart from giraffe, of which there are many, and buffalo. And we saw quite a few water buck and kudu. First Lodge Sable Mountain was poorly managed and generally not very clean. Our shower was an almost non existent dribble and never hot or even warm. It was a good hour to hour and a half drive into the park every day and we covered the same roads/routes every day, for six days from two different lodges. The last three days at Rufiji was the saving grace of the holiday which was well run, clean and with hot water, and at last we covered new ground, which showed it could be done.
