'Contactless' stay turned into a very rude fiasco. It's been a long time since I have had to complain about a hotel I have stayed in! Although we live very locally, my partner and I took care to book somewhere in Oswestry (after a lovely dinner in Oswestry town) that could accommodate a late checkout for wall-to-wall work calls the following weekday morning, from 8am till 2pm. The manageress did have to double-check with her husband over the phone while booking before confirming they could do so, and told us it would incur a fee. So far so good. We were offered an even later checkout as late as 4pm, but my partner let her know that his calls would finish at around 2pm and he had only a short gap by which to travel home to our small nearby village for the next round of phonecalls. However, at exactly 13.56, while my partner was still on the phone to his team and client, and while I was undressed in the bathroom, we heard an abrupt rap on the door. Me being indisposed, Mat had to TERMINATE his work call early to answer the door - after all that - to a strangely dressed man asking him out. It was an early warning by the husband-manager that we were needed to be gone. Three minutes later we heard a car horn honking inexplicably aggressively outside in the driveway. No more than three minutes after this we heard another very intrusive rap on the door. I answered the door, underdressed with my things hastily gathered, and absolutely livid at this point, to the male manager once again, and asked what the issue was. I was told we needed to be out. This was now 2.02pm. The male manager 'assured' me it wasn't him who had honked his car horn... so we left it at that. With me leaving the property being essentially chased out of the door, my poor partner had transferred the fee to the B&B already and was gathering his work laptop, but I was asked smilingly as I stormed past the manager "how I intended to pay". This seemed inimical to me, especially with the indignity of being unceremoniously hurried out the door with a half-run bath, and especially since my partner was still in the room. My partner was informed by the man that his wife Jo the manageress had offered no such late checkout, but then the wife chimed in that she had, but that Mat said he'd be done by 2pm. All strange misunderstandings - the couple need to get their communication up to scratch. Needless to say, being done with work calls by 2pm does not mean we are ready to leave at 13.56. This couple clearly have not mastered the balance between professionality and their home lives, plus the male's attitude really was problematic that day. Excuses were muttered about picking up children from school or something rather but it didn't explain the earliness, the lack of margin for error, or the earlier offer of a later checkout. Eccentric but stuck in their own strange worlds. Contactless it was not!
