Please do not order an Aga reminiscing about what they once were. The new ovens are not a patch on the old, they do not give out heat, or even cook in our case ....... thats if you are lucky enough to get one that works at all, or if you receive the right oven as in my friends case. The service is dreadful since an American company took over. I understand, they laid off almost half the work force to cut costs. Prices still remain high at circa 12,000 plus per oven, so you would expect some sort of service . Unfortunately not.
Here is our experience. We ordered an Aga last year to be installed before Christmas. Site survey was carried out by their wonderful and knowledgable in house surveyor Jim. I don't know how we would have understood how we had to prepare the site without him. Be aware - they have now made all these surveyors redundant to cut costs. I scheduled outside builders, electricians, gas engineers and chimney sweeps to do works as specified by Jim between removal of old AGA and installation of new. Removal did not happen on set date, due to their contractors running late on another job, instead we had to wait over a week for them to return to take out the old Aga. I had to reschedule all of outside contractors to do works just before Christmas (almost impossible) for pre Christmas installation. This came at a great cost which eventually Aga agreed to cover but no extra for time and inconvenience. Aga installed just before Christmas. We were away so were not able to test but we were assured the oven was in and worked. We arrived back on Christmas eve to cook dinner on Christmas day for fourteen people. I put the turkey in overnight as per instructions in the Aga cook book expecting to wake up on Christmas morning to the wonderful aroma of baked turkey wafting up the stairs....... but no, the turkey sat raw in the oven. Christmas day dinner was ruined. I phoned Aga straight after Christmas and was assured that they would sort out the problem and that we would be compensated for all of the problems. They sent someone out. He tried to fix it. Two days later it stopped working. I phoned Aga, they assured me they would fix the problem and don't worry, we would be compensated. They sent someone out, he changed another part. It stopped working. In total it took six call outs, many excuses, lots of changed parts and almost two months later for them to finally fix (in their eyes) the problem. "But you will be compensated" Aga kept reassuring us.The oven still doesn't cook properly, although they claim it does. They have run a temperature check which apparently is enough. They haven't actually tried to cook anything in it. If they did, they will see that a souffle doesn't rise and a lamb shank takes triple the time of the cook book. The good news is the flame remains on. The bad news is the oven kicks out no heat and our once cosy kitchen is like the North Pole.
Finally Aga's big offer of compensation came when they were satisfied they were done - a whopping 250 and a cooking course at the Aga shop in Cobham! I politely asked them to come back with a offer that reflected both the price of the oven and the level of inconvenience. They didn't come back to me, they seem to have instead closed the case. They refuse to answer my emails and calls - five currently outstanding. They never did send any compensation and the oven still doesn't work. They really are the worst company to deal with. From talking to friends I understand I am not alone in my experience with them.
Please forget your love affair with the old Aga, that product no longer exists. It's time to find a new English tradition that our grandchildren and their children can love for years to come.
