In 1998 (when I was very short of cash) I bought an old Raleigh steel-framed hardtail mountain bike in a junk shop for 20. The frame looked OK but it was a pile of bits, with the wheels and many other bits missing. The chainset still had 3 rings, so I rebuilt it with cheap 26" wheels, Rapidfire gear levers and an 8-speed SHIMANO STX rear changer. It's been my utility bike for errands, the odd gravel track or towpath use for 25 years, but recently I've had trouble changing gear. I was in Hinde Racing's shop one day (discussing a much better quality bike) and mentioned this old Raleigh. I was told it was still possible to get Shimano parts to repair old 3x8 gear bikes, and to bring it in. I dropped it off at the shop on Thursday, and by Saturday they had replaced the worn 25-year old gear levers, the old cables (which had signs of rust), had serviced it and re-indexed the gears. Within 48 hours I had what felt like a new bike! So 5 STARS to the ever-helpful staff at Hinde Racing, who used their expert knowledge to refurbish an unfashionable but useful bike for the next 25 years.
