I had high hopes for this auction house, seeing as Lincoln is full of amazing antiques and the catalog reflected this. The thing that let it down for me was the auction itself. I used the online bidding on the Friday, and its really unclear on the amount youre bidding on as the price goes up so fast, so if youre slow you could end up bidding way over what you want. The most devastating experience was on the Sunday sale. Waiting 9 hours for the item to come up, estimated 20-40. I bid 50 and the auctioneer passed it, saying not enough! Whats going on? I feel theres a lot of wizardry going on behind the scenes, and the way the auctioneer sells is away to trick a sale. Saying a clock goes for over 1k yet its estimated 20-40? No thank you.

I participated in a large record auction that Unique Auctions held. The lots had elaborate descriptions that went into some detail on their condition, and gave the impression that whoever graded the records really knew their stuff. These were rare and collectable records, many of them were upwards of 100 each. Because I was bidding internationally, it took some time to ship the records. When they arrived, I was horrified. Almost completely across the board, the records failed to match their descriptions. In the worst cases, and there were many of them, records that had been graded as near mint had scratches on them bad enough to cause skips. I wrote to Unique Auctions as soon as Id started cleaning and playing the records but they were dismissive of my concerns. The proprietor, Terry Woodcock, informed me that the records had all been graded by the original owner, and sold with his descriptions. He told me we give customers 7 days to raise any concerns. I was prepared to return the over-graded records at my own expense, but was told they would not entertain my request for a refund. The fact that the auction house had not done their due diligence and investigated the condition of the records themselves speaks to the level of care they employ in the preparation of their auctions. That I didnt ascertain their returns policy before I spent thousands of pounds on records with them, thats on me, to be sure. But the takeaway from this situation is that Unique Auctions is a company that is content to over-promise and under-deliver. Proceed with caution.
