Great little church unfortunately closed at time. Well kept with a fantastic curved flint wall.

This single cell Norman church lies at the bottom of a farm track off Blackstocks Lane in a small church yard. The interior of the church is dark and cool and and has an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. I was sad to see that the carving of the mermaid on the corbel of the church door had been vandalised since my last visit. There is a local legend that a mermaid dragged a former sailor into the nearby River Lyde and so on out to sea on his wedding day because he had broken his promise to marry her when he was sailing the seas years before.

Probably the nicest church I have ever visited! We visited as my son was doing a project on Norman churches & I'm so glad we did. St Swithun's was built in the 12th century & is one of only 4 single cell apsidal churches in England. It is always open & you are able to freely wander inside & out to fully explore this beautiful little church. Really worth a visit if you are passing.
