The witch hazel walk at end of January should have been cancelled. Not only were the fields ankle deep in mud and snow but the talk was extremely boring. I did not go for a family history lesson, or a talk on cherry trees and every brand of Japonica imported by every known horticultural bod from said country. A group of retired ladies were all but frozen solid, most had walking implements. Many complaints and I did bite the bullet and ask if we could walk and talk at the same time because our combined feet were freezing. The talker agreed...and we set off...for ten feet and he stopped again. After almost an hour we got 50 yards to the witch hazels. By that time most wanted to go back to get the tea and cakes we'd been promised. We then had to wait in minus 2 degrees till some dear lady came out to pour almost cold water over tea bags. She'd forgotten the coffee and had to go find it. We had been told that most of the walk was under cover. There was none. The tea was in an open barn. The plastic chairs were stacked in a pile. Ladies in their 70's do not want to be lifting chairs ftom a stack. Not the best outing. The talker needs to understand that having a 'trapped' group of ladies should not mean they are keen to stand for an hour ankle deep in icy mud an listen to him rattle on about where he worked in 1979.
