Newchurch All Saints, Newchurch, Isle of Wight. The name had arisen in 1066 when William Fitz Osborn requesting he rebuild the Saxon parish church, part of Abbey or Lyre vicarage. Located between Sandown and Newport in the southeast of the Island. This villages name relates to the new church that was built in 1087 by the Norman monks of Lyra. The parish of Newchurch was for many centuries one of the largest on the Isle of Wight. Stretching from the north to south coast; by the early 19th Century the growing resort towns of Ventnor and Ryde were still included within its boundaries. The present day parish is far smaller and includes Apse Heath, Winford, Whiteley Bank, Alverstone. The north-western corner of the churchyard offers a lovely view of the Valley , river Yar. There is acces to both a parish memorial garden and a foothpath to a number of popular walks including Martin's Field , Alverstone nature reserve. There are many reasons to visit Newchurch. Not least the famous Garlic Farm in nearby Mersley, Amazon World. As well as Thompson Garden Centre (bursting with summer plants and Christmas decorations depending on the time of year) to name a few. Also, behind the church, you can enjoy a walk through an ancient copse, once part of a much larger medieval hunting forest.ancient oak woodland; bluebells in spring, autumn colour and red squirrels.
