Beyond the education, there was the humanity, Many of my good traits have there roots back to Orwell. At Orwell I learned what individual and community honor was and how to earn it. I learned trust, I learned team work.
I remember a very down to earth positive culture at Orwell, I really have no memory of any negativity expressed or shown towards the student from the faculty or the others in the student community. When discipline was required it was fair, and great lengths were taken to ensure we understood the reasons behind the disciplinary action and it was handled privately. I can only remember one instance myself, Headmaster Bell took the time to understand the situation and advise me of how my infraction could unknowingly affect a younger student. That's all there was to it and I stopped doing it because I now understood why I should not behave that way and I did not want any of my fellow students to be negatively impacted by my actions. At Orwell I was never in fear of discipline, it was administered in a totally different way.
We learned how to be responsible, dependable, how to be neat, to look out for each other. We learned to accept each other as our equal, not just though our words but through our actions.
At Orwell there was always something to do, never a boring moment. We did not have access to TV or Radio and only limited access to newspapers, but what we did have was an excellent sports program where everyone had an opportunity to learn and play. You did not have to be great, you just needed to enjoy it. We learned and played Soccer, Rugby, Field Hockey, Cricket, Rounders, Golf, Tennis, Squash, Billiards, and Table Tennis. We had a Gymnasium, a huge salt water pool, a museum, photography room, model building room, library spacious grounds and much, much more. Always something to do with others or also time to explore and wonder on our own. I cant recall ever feeling lonely at Orwell. We also had easy access to the faculty after class hours to help with our studies or what ever the need.
While the faculty at Orwell Park provided excellent care and supervision they also provided a feeling of freedom where we could be ourselves to create our own individuality and follow our interests. We had time and space be independent while at the same time we were secure in knowing we were safe and the faculty would be there if and when we needed them.
The only regret I have about Orwell Park is that I had to leave it and return to the States.
