The Church of St James in Shipton, Shropshire is a medieval church with a surprising connection to the Plymouth Colony in 17th century America. The church is said to have a pre-Norman foundation but the current structure dates from the 12th century. The nave is the oldest section, with the tower added soon after. Separated from the nave by a simple round headed arch, the chancel was rebuilt in 1589 in the Elizabethan Gothic Survival style. The flooring through both nave and chancel is a mix of reused but frequently illegible ledger stones and some medieval tiling. The Mytton family of Shipton Hall are memorialised with a quartet of in-situ ledgers in the sanctuary. A small area to park your car is available at up the lane at the west end of the church.

Shipton Church is remote, its difficult to access and parking is limited, however its a worthwhile find, the bell tower is large and unique
