We were commissioned by the client to provide calculations to satisfy Part A of the Building Regulations for the removal of two small chimneys, and a deadline of 15 August which we achieved. The calculations fell under our minimum fee charge which the client accepted.
After we had sent the calculations the client asked us to provide calculations for a small internal door opening. The client was informed that structural engineers do not get involved in internal door openings which only require a standard door lintel, and that it was not part of the original brief. (most houses have 10 approx. doors and builders buy these lintels off the shelf to install with no structural engineering input).
We sent the invoice to the client and had no response. We sent a reminder letter, and the client sent a letter stating we had not completed the calculations for the internal door, and that there was a small gap at the back of the chimney. Our Managing Director went to the property, and looked at the issue, which was not structural so the builder could have dealt with it, whereby the client got very angry and stated numerous unfounded statements regarding the company. Our MD tried to reason with the client but he would not listen so our MD left.
Our contract with the client:
a) We had a deadline which we met
b) The client received approval for the calculations for Part A of the building regulations from the local authority
The client refused to pay. Even though it was a small amount of money we raised a default notice of our intention to take the matter to court. The client then stated he had paid last week he had not. He in fact paid on the same day of this review and then commenced to write this review.
