We've been using this chip shop since moving in locally 15 years ago. In general it has been of a high standard. The business has changed hands at least twice in this time, and, unfortunately, the present owners have let things slide a little. I understand how hard things are at the moment, we were involved in catering for many years, yes prices rise, but cutting corners while raising prices is not conducive to customer satisfaction. We generally used Marias Fish Bar around 3 times a month. Getting fish n chips is usually a Friday/Saturday treat, but I noted that if I went at 5 - 6pm, on several occasions the chips were either dark and greasy, or shrivelled and hard. To me this seems like they were rehashed from lunchtime. Also portion sizes have been reduced, whilst the price has gone up. If I purchase at 6.30 - 7.00pm, then they have cooked the chips fresh, and I have no complaints. I would also mention, that on the odd ocassion that I have purchased a pie, they have not been very hot, in fact lukewarm, and again, I believe they are probably re-heated, as the pastry is often rock hard. It's a shame that standards have slipped. Due to this, I stopped using them for a while. But last night (a Wednesday) we decided to use them as we hadn't anything in. Big mistake. I went at 6.00pm and ordered a large cod and large chips. Generally, when they cook fish, it's to order, so you have to wait around 10 mins +. Within about 5 mins I was told my order was ready. I was somewhat surprised. Once home it was apparent why. The fish was paper thin and the chips dark and greasy and definitely reheated. It was the worst meal I'd had from there, and, as I'd eaten around half the chips before surrendering them to the bin, I paid the price with a greasy taste repeating on me all evening. Suffice to say I shall not be going back.
