Recovery Connections is the most fantastic peer lead substance misuse treatment facility I have ever come across, believe me I've come across a few. I've been in the addiction treatment industry since 1996 as well as being a service user since 1993 so when I say I know what I'm talking about,I do! Recovery Connections is primarily a charity offering hope and solutions to individuals intrested in finding out more about "Recovery" However, their solutions offer "Recovery" to a CITY and as it was formally known as Hope North East the entire region, as well as to individuals and familys that they serve. Addiction impacts EVERYONE it's what is known as a stigmatised systemic illness that impacts all that come into contact with the substance misuser (that is the politically correct term, you might know them as addicts, junkies, alcoholics etc). Fighting the stigma and moving into the community has been achieved by several interventions, the most ingenious being the Recovery Bike. The Recovery Bike essentially rides around the community in the town and offers "FREE" coffee to anyone and while the person drinks the latest "Recovery Roast" their is a conversation around "Recovery and the solutions availabil to anyone wanting help, support or care around this systemic challange. BREAKING THE SILENCE is the primary purpose of this ingenious way of breaking the stigma and giving the community a safe and non judgemental approach to this often contentious problem. Very much like breaking the stigma around safe sex and HIV. Around a warm cup of coffee the conversations start and often the healing begins giving a glimpse of hope for societies hopeless. Clients, their family members and members of community's are informed around the many many different stages of the recovery process. People are told, informed and sign posted into community ambassadors and peer recovery coaches who use their lived experiance to build rapor with their clients fostering trust and empathy empowering the individuals with the tools and resources in a non judgemental enviroment that, when the client is ready, the courage to change. When and if this happens an army of loving support is called to action, bring the entire community and social services together in a SMART INTELLIGENT PROFESSIONAL AND RESOURCE CONCIOUS WAY that would put ANY PRIVATE TREATMENT FACILITY to shame. This is by no means a small feat but should be a lesson to every institution out there of how the WORKPLACE CULTURE of Recovery Connections brings about share holder value.(This would be the board of trustees and funders) The volunteers, staff and auxiliary workers certainly dont do the work for the money. They bring their hearts to the organisation the Workplace culture is filled with a HONESTY that would put any authentic servant leader to shame. Recovery Connections is one of those charity's that have the ability to align individuals vocation to good governance, compliance and buisness acumen that would teach any CEO a thing or two. Beyond the detox and the comprehensive state of the art treatment programme where clients are housed and prepared for the outside world by becoming assets to society. The Doctors, Peer Recovery Specialists and Professional Recovery Coache creat individual treatment plans combined with the team that support the clients integrating back into society by assisting with housing ongoing education and life skills. Providing a therapeutic enviroment that promotes the creation of recovery capital. Pointing the clients to mutual aid resources and self help groups while facilitating family reunions often healing relationships that have been missing for years. Finally, it would be remiss of me not to mention the importance of their EARLY interventions. Recovery Connections is certainly pioneering collegial recovery within the UK working with Universities and colleges in and around the surrounding area educating and supporting ON CAMPUS interventions that aid to the PREVENTION of the problem in the first place by educating students around solutions.
