After 24 hours an initial diagnostics was done and I was sent an quote. Straight away, I knew something did not seem right because of the unrealistic line items on the quote:
1. I had just over a quarter tank of petrol in the car. They quoted me 72 (inc VAT) to dispose of it
2. The fuel pump was deemed faulty and needed replacing. The part cost alone was 646.93 (inc VAT)
I rang my local Ford dealership and asked them for a price for the part (Ford genuine) and they quoted 517.54. That was 129.39 cheaper!! I also asked if they would charge 72 for disposing of fuel and they said no!
I spoke to Motor Medics and they said they only use one supplier for their parts and they wouldnt use anyone else. I felt stuck and had no choice but to continue with them. If I decided to take the car to the Ford dealer, Motor Medics wanted to charge me for 1 hour worth of diagnostics and then I would have to pay around 100 on top to relocate the car. Luckily, they agreed to me supplying the part, but it meant I had to take time out to pick up the part and deliver it to them- they wouldnt order it themselves.
Replacing the fuel pump didnt resolve the issue fully. The person from receptionist who rang me didnt have proper information for me. I was lead to believe the car was no better off and not drivable and given the option of one more hours of diagnostics or pay for the car to be relocated to me. It turned out that the car was actually starting and running but miss-firing. They couldnt be sure of what the fault was and the next round of work would cost 400-500 with no guarantee of fixing it. I couldnt afford that on top of the 997.21 I was already expected to pay. At this point Motor Medics agreed to drop the car off to me.
On the final invoice I was charge 36 (inc VAT) for new fuel. The car was dropped off to me with the empty fuel light on! I asked for a refund on this and I was told 36 of fuel was put in and was used up for test runs- which is totally ridiculous. Even at 1.50 per liter for petrol, 36 equates to 24 liters. That is close to half a tank of fuel in my car. Even at 30 miles per gallon, that equates to 150 miles of driving! They did not test run the car for 150 miles!
I feel Motor Medics have taken advantage of the situation and charged me unreasonable prices
1. Charged me 4 hours of labour local Ford dealer said its not 4 hours of work
2. Charged me 72 to dispose of around 20 liters of fuel
3. Charged me 36 for new fuel which they did not provide
I am fine with paying item 1, because it might have taken extra work, but items 2 and 3 are just unreasonable. I have logged a claimant with RAC and I await their response on the matter.
