Update 8th April '23. My initial review, a few weeks ago, was based on experience of the home up until the takeover by new owners. I agreed to give a review, but it would be based on that history. Since the takeover, there has been a lot of activity towards refurbishing unused rooms with a view to full occupancy. That will take the home from 19 to around 55 residents. The owners have introduced an electronic data management system to replace paper records. That seems to be working. Insulation has been improved and a new heating system is being gradually introduced to improve efficiency. New furniture and furnishings are appearing. So major investment is being made in material terms. However - recently, staff-retention and recruitment, seems to have become an issue. The number of carers on duty at night has been reduced to two. This represents, in my view, the absolute bare minimum level of staffing for the care of 19 vulnerable people. Many of the residents, including my mum, need two staff to help them go to the bathroom, to get dressed, or go to bed. They cannot do anything on their own. It is far from setting a standard of excellence in staffing levels, and the people affected directly are the residents and the staff themselves. I have seen this in another home, and staff just move on. I have to say that I am disappointed in what I perceive as a reduction of focus on actual care, by obliging two staff to take responsibility for an entire care home at night. In any sort of emergency, two could not possibly cope with that and maintain safe care for all the residents. It was marginal for that before, with three on shift. Original review, February '23 " my mum moved to Stoneyford in Q3 2022. She had been in another local place for 18 months prior to that. The quality of care at Stoneyford is a vast improvement for her, and she is so much happier. She is physically improved too, as a result of much better attention to personal details of care. The catering is really good too, and the cooks have really paid attention to my mum's special dietary needs. The home is just under new ownership, and we were invited to meet the new owners today. They are a dynamic couple, with two other care homes under their management. They have great plans to improve and expand the business, and I feel confident, having met them, that they are genuine and passionate about the venture. Time will tell on that, and I look forward to seeing how their material renovations, and the recruitment and retention of excellent care staff works out."
