Repository of local information for Manningtree, Mistley, & Lawford, crammed into Manningtree High Street, local library, (& NOT the 'PIN' indicated on Google Maps). As well as the period monotone photos & line drawings, there are some scale models & even some antique items that were once in popular use. A lot of the resources present the local history of the town developing due to its siting on the River Stour, so becoming an important stop for the Thames barges. This led to the building of Mistley Quay, the malthouses & the 19th Century redevelopment as a spa town, according to the vision of developer Richard Rigby. Of course, no museum dedicated to Manningtree & Mistley is complete without exhibits presenting its most famous resident, Matthew Hopkins, the self-appointed Witchfinder General. His brief reign of terror, using Mistley as his operating base, has left a long-term shadow in history that demonstrates a radioactive refusal to retreat. Despite the museum room being located within Manningtree Library, it's open a lot less than the actual library. All day Saturday, but only for a couple of hours, a couple of days in the week.
