called the branch to try to open a bank account, they tell me i need to come in branch to open one. after a 40 minute walk there they tell me i can only open an account online

You've got 2 counters at this branch with a clerk/teller/banker/cashier or whatever you want to call the representative in each one. If the other person isn't attending to (wanting to see) customers, consider CLOSING the second counter with a "closed" sign or shut the little window partition than making it awkward for the customer. It's quite ambiguous to ascertain if both tellers are taking clients, and annoying to hear "Can you wait for my colleague please?" when approaching the rep. I'd rather be dealing with a cash deposit machine FWIW than these humans.
