All Saints Church, a Grade II listed building. Located in the village of Loose, (near Maidstone). A beautiful church in a beautiful village. There is no exact date of when the first church was built here, but there is a reference from AD 832, (Monks of Canterbury took a financial interest in Loose and probably built a rudimentary church there). Another interesting piece of information about the church is that the Reverend Richard Boys who was vicar here was also the chaplain of St. Helena during Napoleon Bonaparte's exile on the island. All Saints Church Yard is a quiet, beautiful place; full of trees which cast shadows across those who sleep the eternal sleep. A place to reflect on ones own mortality as one meanders amongst the trees and weather-beaten tomb stones. But there is one tree of very special interest here. A Yew tree, reportedly over 1500 years old; stand next to it, touch it and feel young again! After you have visited All Saints Church, you must, find time to wander around the village and to see and explore all the other lovely buildings and structures that Loose has to offer. There is a viaduct that goes across the valley it was designed and built by Thomas Telford in 1830. It is a beautiful piece of engineering and fits like a glove into the surrounding beauty that is Loose Village. It is about a 100 metre from the Chequers Inn. The Chequers Inn A former 17th century coaching inn on the old road to Hastings. It is situated next to the stream and the mill pond which is bisected by a causeway (Brooks Path) that allows one to meander along it taking in the peaceful beauty of the water as it accompanies you only to disappear underground as the causeway meets the road. The Loose Stream sometimes called the River Loose or Langley Stream is a tributary of the River Medway and is about 5 miles long and was notable for the number of watermills that it powered in the proceeding centuries. It rises in Langley, south east of Maidstone and flows through Boughton Monchelsea, Loose and joins the River Medway at Tovil.
