A couple of months before our wedding, the cake details were finalised and we discussed when payment was due & agreed when the cake would be ready for collection. A few days before the wedding I contacted Ann to let her know the cake would be collected by my brother and gave her an additional day to complete the cake. I asked Ann to ensure the cake was packaged suitably for transit.
The day before our wedding, when my brother collected the cake, Ann presented it in the centre of an open box with no lid; my brother was concerned about the lack of packaging but Ann told him not to worry as the cake was as solid as a rock, and as long as my brother drove normally, it would be fine. My brother then very carefully drove the cake to us, a journey that would ordinarily take 30 minutes, taking over an hour, to avoid any sudden braking. On arrival, the top tier of the cake had fallen off (see photos), taking out most of the second tier.
With less than 24 hours before the wedding, I desperately tried to contact Ann for help, though unfortunately, I was not able to get through to her. Thankfully, the hotel where we were holding our reception had a number of very experienced chefs who agreed to look at the cake and try to help us. The chefs observed the cake and stated:
1: The dowels used to support the top tier of the cake were too short, and therefore couldnt provide the required level of support.
2: The fondant icing had not dried and was still very damp/wet to the touch. The chef commented the cake should have been iced 3-4 days earlier, to ensure it was completely dry, and suitable for transit.
When I finally managed to speak with Ann some 5-6 hours later, I confronted her about the problem with the cake and she said she had thought the cake was dry. As it was the night before my wedding we agreed to speak later regarding compensation. Id like to add during the conversation, at no point did Ann offer to help in any way, she was keen to get off the phone.
After the wedding I emailed Ann and was ignored. I contacted Ann again and she then replied, stating that she had spoken to some of her cake friends and she was not at fault, though she admitted to working on the cake the day before and the morning of collection. In another email, I reiterated everything, but Ann just ignored me once again. I would not recommend Ann. The cake was not to the standard required, and the service we received afterwards was even worse. Things do go wrong, thats life, but true professionals and people who care about their customers wouldnt act in this way. Avoid.
