Haven't visited, but intend to. The original of the English Civil War regiment that I reenact with (Colonel Nicholas Devereuxs) garrisoned this at some point from 1644 to 1646 and some works may have been constructed there. The possibility of there being defensive works present only came to light when a letter from Colonel Devereux (based at Malmesbury) to the garrison commander ordering him to fortify the place came up for auction a number of years ago.

Really interesting to see the tower and undercroft up close, as well as artefacts and notes on the history of the Abbey. Thank you!
