I spent 5 weeks at ECR in 08/2021 to 09/2021, and it was a great experience that put me on the right track to abstinence. Im a Nurse by profession, and my experience at ECR convinced me that substance misuse was the area in which I wanted to practice. I just wanted to update Lester and the team that I start my new substance misuse nurse position in Westminster on 24/04/23. Thank you to Lester and the entire team at ECR. You showed me the way!

My son stayed with ECR just over a year ago for 2 weeks at a cost of 5000. Absolute waste of money. First week was spent in near isolation due to the owner being paranoid about COVID. They were told that my son has Asperger's which seemed to fall on deaf ears. They were also told of dietry needs but that also was ignored on a few occasions. He got 1 session of 1 to 1 and that's it. The group meetings were like a Sunday school. All in all he had no help no after care as I had to phone to ask about it. The food and accommodation were at best seaside b&b. Not everyone believes in god but it was rammed down their throats. He was there volunterally. Unfortunately due to the lack of support he has relapsed. Would rather send him on a 5 star holiday for 2 weeks. It'll be cheaper

Unfortunately not a good experience. They have little to no knowledge of cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy- shocking considering its a recovery place for alcoholics. My dad almost died in their care. He was developing severe HE for days and only Kelly, not one other person, mentioned it could be wernicke syndrome (not what it was but at least she tried to let me know). Dad continued to deteriorate. I heard him on the phone. Extremely slurred speech. Nobody mentioned this to me. Couldnt hold his tea (I heard him drop it on the phone). Staff had to shower him. I had to ring out of hours as I was worried. Again, little care shown. I was not kept up to date as regular as I should have been. Staff were very nonchalant. Told dad is fine. After two weeks dad had a big variceal bleed and an ambulance was called. I wasnt called straight away. The therapist called me a short while after. Told me he was bleeding from his behind. Significant amounts of blood. When I rang A&E the nurse put me through to resus and I was told no he was actually vomiting blood too. Janie went to visit him the following day, I wish I had just come and taken him home but I felt Janie was trying to control the situation. I rang her the next morning to give her an update on dad. I didnt know they were so involved. They didnt call me. But apparently she was calling the hospital all night. She said oh youre ringing to give ME an update?. She told me he had an aneurysm. Both his bleed and the HE symptoms are caused by cirrhosis they knew he had before he went in. We drove him 4.5 hours to them. After the weekend in hospital I spoke to Janie. She said she hoped he could stay for the further two weeks. I trusted her and the hospital staff that he was well enough. They only cared if he was safe enough to walk up and down stairs. Monday they let me know that dad isnt well again. He was showing signs of HE. Again, not picked up by them (or the hospital for that matter!). We arranged to collect him later in the week. I tried to contact them over the weekend about making payment, I said I would get my nan (84) to transfer it Monday as she couldnt get to the bank. That was okay. Then they decide he needs to go home. Hes waking up other residents. Showing signs of paranoia. I tried to arrange someone to collect him. My uncle and I were worried and wondered if he was well enough to come back. We wanted some help for him but we were far away. Janie calls Tuesday morning telling me do you know what your dad is doing?? She then told me hes turning on the gas and making other residents unsafe. She wouldnt call the police or an ambulance though. I begged her. I was crying my heart out. They treated him like disposable rubbish at this point. Janie barely responded to contact from me. Tuesday morning I asked how he was. We expressed our concerns again and asked them to call 999 or 111 to get him assessed. I tried frantically to call the police and ambulance myself. Despite dad apparently endangering people, they refused the police and told them they werent needed. Janie sent him home in a taxi. In the state he was in. She didnt tell me the taxi company, any details. Just one text to say your dad is now at home. Like I wasnt already there waiting for him. We werent refusing to collect him, we just wanted him assessed first. My uncle was concerned to get him and since he was with professionals we thought he was safe. Dad was admitted to hospital that evening. His eyes were like saucers. He had an infection which caused a huge HE episode. He was paranoid, agitated, not himself at all. East coast recovery didnt act in his best interests but they did send me an invoice for almost 2,000. The invoice doesnt even add up. I have reported to CCQ but I have no doubt theyll manipulate the situation. I was always going to pay, when he was staying for the extra two weeks. And the money was going to go in monday as soon as my nan could get to the bank. But then they wanted him home. And I wasnt going to pay that much money after the state he was in.

Going to East Coast recovery is the best thing I have ever done. Having gone in initially for 2 weeks I stayed 3 months and I wouldn't exchange the time I had there for anything in the world. The staff are excellent. I felt very well taken care of and supported through the challenging but incredibly rewarding therapy. The food was lovely and I was very comfortable throughout my stay. There is a real feeling of unity and fellowship at the centre which made my stay so enjoyable and I will always treasure the memories created at ECR. Their teaching of the 12 step program is thorough and energetic - the enthusiasm and passion the staff have for recovery is inspirational. The amount of learning that was packed in to the weeks I was there was invaluable and while it was often challenging, I believe that I could have had no better treatment for my illness and I felt fully supported throughout. I will never be able to express all that East Coast Recovery has done for me. It is a wonderful place and I whole heartedly recommend it for anyone suffering from the disease of addiction.
